So, we have been on board this ship since January 4. We made one stop in Hawaii for a day, and continued on toward Japan. Today, it is January 20. After 16 days, everyone has settled into ship life.
What Bill and I notice the most is that we are using our brains a lot! From seminars every morning about the ocean, global environmental issues and intercultural communication to our classes on Culinary Tourism, Religions of the East and Global Leadership and evening lecture series, we find ourselves immersed in learning from experts in their field. Really cool.
But we do have time to play. Our photos this week include sunrises and sunsets, classrooms, and deck life (yes, there has been some sunshine and pool time!) Today was a designated study day, so immediately after breakfast everyone began to study….the effects of sunshine on a sun-screened body. We were out on the deck with the students, listening to music, watching the ocean and soaking up the sun. Fortunately it began to rain after lunch so we did get to work (after yoga, Tai Chi, spinning and a little nap!) We are relaxing and restoring the body, heart and mind on this voyage.
PS: To our yoga and Tai Chi friends: We are discovering the challenge of balance on a constantly pitching and rolling ship. Yoga flows with lots of movement and “heads down” require a strong stomach….not just muscles, but also to keep the contents of your stomach IN your stomach. LOL!
Tonight we met the 9 students (7 girls and 2 guys) in our ship family for our first family dinner. They are under grads and post grads from all over the USA – from Connecticut to California. We will be getting together for meals and checking in on them throughout the voyage. We have also met other students who consider us their family, so for certain we will not be lonely.
As of this writing, the captain informed us that we will be rolling and pitching tonight due to high winds and waves….we are both sporting “the patch” once again…fingers crossed we don’t get sick. We were doing so well without any meds or bands, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
We truly start our international adventure on Friday, when we finally arrive in Japan. Getting excited!
